The A-Team is a group of ex-United States Army Special Forces who, at the end of the Vietnam War, were convicted of a crime they did not commit and managed to escape from the military police. As fugitives, the A-Team work as soldiers of fortune, using their military training to fight oppression or injustice. Hannibal, along with B.A. Baracus, Templeton "Faceman" Peck, and H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock make up the A-Team.

In the pilot episode ("Mexican Slayride"), Hannibal is described as follows by a reporter colleague of Amy Allen: "The leader [of the A-Team] is a Colonel named John Smith. But everybody calls him Hannibal. The guy has a very unorthodox style." In the same episode B.A. reveals that Hannibal took his name from a famous military leader and tactican called Hannibal.

Hannibal is best know for his cigars, black leather gloves, being “on the jazz” and his catchphrase “I love it when a plan comes together.” He is renowned by both allies and enemies for being cool-headed, clever and cocky. He often makes sarcastic comments in the face of adversity usually with a big smile on his face and his cigar wedged between his teeth.

Hannibal’s guns of choice are a S&W 439, S&W 39-2, and a Browning Hi Power.

One of Hannibal’s passions is acting, however, because he’s on the run from the Military he only gets parts in low-budget horror movies playing roles where his face can’t be seen, usually the monster. He’s played "Gatorella", "Killgator" ,“Id“, “Monster Masher” and his most famous, "The Aquamaniac". He also tried out for the part of “Ruff the Bear”. He gets the parts playing his own agent. Even though they’re only bit parts Hannibal takes his roles very seriously, often trying to put some emotion into his character.

Hannibal also enjoys using his acting skills by disguising himself as one of his many aliases in order to met the teams prospective clients. One of those aliases is Mr. Lee who runs the Laundromat.

Background:

According to the pilot episode Hannibal spent 3 years and 5 months at school in Paris and is supposedly from the Mid-West.

No mention of his family is ever made, but in the episode “Blood, Sweat and Cheers” we meet his friend Jack Harmon. He and Jack had a falling out over a woman who chose Jack over Hannibal. Jack and the woman had a son called "Kid" Harmon who is a race car driver. He and his wife Dana were expecting a baby in the episode. They refer to Hannibal as "Uncle John" even though he is really no relation to them.

Apparently Hannibal likes to celebrate Thanksgiving in style. In one episode he mentions "Hannibal's Famous four-day Thanksgiving Experience"
